College Advisory Program

Senior Parents:
The past two weeks have been very busy in the College Counseling office. This is because the first college deadline was November 1. This does not mean the application process is over. The majority of the students will continue to submit applications for “regular decision,” which is January 1 for most colleges/universities. However, the deadline for Sagemont students will be December 1. By having this deadline our students will not only be ahead of the game, but more importantly they will be able to focus on midterm exams and winter break will truly be a vacation.
In the midst of applications it must not be forgotten that scholarship and financial aid opportunities are always present:
A great site for searching for scholarships is www.fastweb.org. Your child can enter their profile and they will be introduced to scholarships opportunities that are applicable to them.
The CSS PROFILE is required by many private colleges and universities to determine your eligibility for non-government financial aid, such as the institution's own grants, loans and scholarships. To view the colleges that utilizes the CSS Profile visit the website at https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/. Students should register for the PROFILE as soon as they are sure about where they are applying for aid.
Florida Bright Futures Scholarship is a program that rewards students for their academic achievements during high school by offering funding for postsecondary educational and career goals in Florida. Your child can apply for the Bright Futures Scholarship beginning December 1. For more information on the Bright Futures Scholarship visit http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/bf/
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the application used by colleges and universities to determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans, and work-study programs. The first day to fill out the application is January 1, 2009. For additional information about the FAFSA, go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
Junior Parents:
It’s time to start planning. Your child’s junior year will be focused on SAT and ACT testing. Performing well in anything requires preparation, which is why it is important that your child begins to think about college admissions tests. There are many resources including books, flashcards, practice tests, and most importantly test prep courses.
Don’t forget that SAT Prep is available at The Sagemont School by Educational & Diagnostic Services (EDS). Below are upcoming SAT Prep classes for juniors.
Session 1: Mondays and Wednesdays, January 12, 2009-March 9, 2009 from 4:30-6:30p.m. Call now to register. Space is limited.
Session 2: Mondays & Wednesdays, March 16, 2009-May 13, 2009 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Registration deadline is February 1, 2009.
