A Message from the Headmaster
Brent Goldman
November 7, 2008
Dear Sagemont Parents,
We are very proud of the reputation Sagemont has earned as one of the top college preparatory programs in the area. The class of 2008 earned over 2.8 million dollars in merit scholarships. They were accepted to schools such as University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, and Duke University. Based on our success, colleges are now coming to us to recruit our students directly. On Monday, November 3, Ed Gillis, the Executive Director from the University of Miami, came to Sagemont to address our National Honor Society members.
Mr. Gillis talked to our students about admissions to selective universities, not just the University of Miami. He outlined the college process and how our students can stand out in a crowd. Some of the specific topics he addressed in his talk included:
Having access to experts such as Ed Gillis is a huge advantage to our students as they embark on the college admissions process. We are honored that he took time out of his busy schedule to address our students.
Even though it is only the beginning of November, our college advisement office led by Mellesia Nelson has been extremely busy. Over 30 colleges have visited our campus since school started. Our high school students have already taken a practice SAT and the PSAT on our campus. We have had grade- level college meetings as well as individual family meetings for seniors and most juniors. We have also co-sponsored two financial aid workshops conducted by Weston based College Planning.
This month we will begin our eighth grade family meetings. Every eighth grade family will meet with Mrs. Iacono, Ms. Melendez, and myself to begin coming up with a high school plan and begin working on the college process for our incoming ninth graders. These meetings are very important and set the tone for a successful high school career.
Please feel free to contact me regarding our college advising program. We are very proud of this program.
Go Lions!
Sincerely,
Brent Goldman, Ed.D
